Unearthing Our Earliest Easter Memories
When a dedicated listener reached out and asked us to share some of our family’s Easter traditions, we knew it was a topic far too rich to ignore. The question immediately resonated with us, sparking a cascade of vivid memories that we simply had to turn into an entire episode. Together, Tara and I embarked on a delightful stroll down memory lane, revisiting the Easter celebrations of our childhoods. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that nearly every cherished memory revolved squarely around food!
From the aroma of simmering sauces to the vibrant colors of homemade desserts, our earliest Easters were a feast for the senses. We discussed how the blending of family members, through marriage and new generations, often ushered in a beautiful array of new and wonderful traditions. This intermingling of cultures and culinary practices enriched our holiday experiences, creating unique celebrations that honored both old and new customs.
The Discovery of Pastiera Napoletana: A Sweet Revelation
One particularly memorable story we shared was Tara’s first encounter with a traditional Italian grain pie, famously known as Pastiera Napoletana. This iconic Neapolitan dessert, with its rich history and intricate flavors, was a revelation. A blend of cooked wheat berries, ricotta cheese, candied fruit, and aromatic orange flower water, Pastiera Napoletana is a labor of love, often prepared days in advance of Easter Sunday. Tara instantly fell in love with its unique texture and exquisite taste, and it quickly earned its place among our family’s must-have Easter dishes. Its inclusion perfectly illustrates how new traditions, introduced by new family members or experiences, can become just as integral and beloved as those that have been around for generations.

Manhattan Special Taste Test: A Nostalgic Sip
We’re absolutely loving our new taste test segment on the podcast, and we truly hope you are too! It’s a fantastic way to explore unique food and beverage items that hold a special place in Italian-American culture and beyond. In this episode, we turned our attention to a beloved Italian specialty soda: Manhattan Special.
Manhattan Special has been an iconic beverage since 1895, famously crafted in Brooklyn, New York. Known for its distinct, bold flavors and use of pure cane sugar, it’s a nostalgic favorite for many. We decided to try three of its most popular flavors: the vibrant Orange, the creamy Vanilla, and, of course, the classic Original Espresso Coffee Soda. Each offered a unique experience, transporting us back to the old-school Italian delis and eateries where these sodas are a staple.
The Original, with its rich, slightly bitter coffee notes and effervescent fizz, is a truly unique drink that coffee lovers appreciate. The Orange flavor was bright and zesty, a refreshing twist on traditional orange soda, while the Vanilla provided a smooth, sweet, and comforting profile. We shared our immediate reactions, debated our favorites, and discussed the history and cultural significance of this remarkable soda. If you have the means to pick up these distinctive sodas, we wholeheartedly invite you to follow along and taste test with us! It adds an extra layer of fun and engagement to the listening experience.

An Italian-American Easter Feast: Essential Recipes
Beyond the sweets and sodas, an Italian-American Easter table is always laden with an incredible array of savory dishes, each telling its own story of heritage and festivity. These recipes are more than just food; they are culinary pillars of our celebrations, bringing families together and creating indelible memories. Here are some of the essential dishes that grace our Easter spread, with links to our trusted recipes so you can bring these traditions to your own home:
- For many, Easter isn’t complete without the king of savory pies, Pizzagaina. This hearty, multi-layered “pizza rustica” is packed with various cured meats, cheeses, and eggs, making it a truly substantial and satisfying dish. It’s often prepared on Holy Saturday and enjoyed cold or at room temperature, signaling the end of Lent.
- The visually stunning and incredibly delicious Italian Easter Bread, often braided and adorned with colorful dyed eggs, is both a symbolic and culinary centerpiece. It’s a slightly sweet, fluffy bread that’s perfect for sharing.
- Hailing from Liguria, Torta Pasqualina, or “Easter Pie,” is another savory delight. This spinach and ricotta pie, typically with whole eggs baked into its layers, is encased in a delicate, flaky crust, representing renewal and spring.
- To kick off the feast, a generous Antipasto Platter is a must. Featuring an assortment of cured meats, cheeses, olives, marinated vegetables, and crusty bread, it’s the perfect prelude to the main courses.
- A classic Lasagna Recipe, often a rich and comforting meat lasagna, frequently finds its place on the Easter table, providing a hearty and beloved option that caters to all ages.
- For the main event, lamb is a traditional choice. We offer two fantastic recipes: a succulent Roasted Boneless Leg of Lamb that’s easy to carve and bursting with flavor, or a more rustic and incredibly tender Slow Roasted Leg of Lamb and Potatoes, often cooked until it falls off the bone.
- Alternatively, a beautifully prepared Brown Sugar Glazed Spiral Ham is another popular choice, offering a sweet and savory counterpoint to the traditional lamb.
- And to round off the meal with a refreshing Italian flair, our Limoncello Spritz Recipe provides a bright, citrusy cocktail that’s perfect for celebrating the joyous occasion.
Beyond the Plate: The Spirit of Easter Celebrations
While food is undoubtedly a central pillar of our Easter traditions, the essence of the holiday extends far beyond the plate. It’s about the gathering of loved ones, the laughter echoing through a bustling home, and the shared stories that reinforce our family bonds. Easter, for us, is a celebration of community, resilience, and the joy of coming together. It’s a time when we honor the customs passed down from our ancestors, while also embracing the evolving nature of family life, welcoming new interpretations and creations. The blend of old and new, the familiar comforts alongside exciting discoveries, is what makes each Easter uniquely special and profoundly memorable.
