Experience Gourmet Delight: Easy Fig and Prosciutto Pizza with Creamy Brie

Transform your pizza night with an elegant and incredibly easy-to-make gourmet pizza featuring a harmonious blend of sweet, savory, and creamy flavors. This thin-crust masterpiece showcases lightly caramelized fresh figs, rich and melted Brie cheese, the delightful saltiness of prosciutto, and a fragrant, gremolata-inspired sprinkle of orange zest and fresh rosemary. Perfect as a sophisticated appetizer for your next gathering or a satisfying main course when paired with a crisp, fresh salad, this fig and prosciutto pizza is sure to become a cherished recipe in your culinary repertoire.

Our inspiration for this unique pizza creation stemmed from various restaurant appetizer menus where we first encountered the irresistible combination of figs and cured ham. While many versions traditionally feature goat cheese, we sought to elevate our homemade rendition with a distinct twist. We opted for the luxurious creaminess and buttery notes of melted Brie, a choice that proved to be a resounding success. The Brie provides an incredibly smooth, ooey-gooey texture and a subtle tang that perfectly complements the other ingredients. The addition of bright orange zest and aromatic rosemary delivers a refreshing counterpoint, creating a sophisticated flavor profile that truly sets this pizza apart. We are confident that you will adore this unique blend of ingredients as much as we do.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its balanced complexity and approachable preparation. It’s an ideal dish for those looking to impress guests without spending hours in the kitchen. Each bite offers a symphony of tastes: the natural sweetness of the figs, the delicate saltiness of the prosciutto, the smooth, decadent Brie, and the fragrant herbaceous finish. Whether you are a seasoned home chef or just starting your culinary journey, this recipe provides a straightforward path to an extraordinary dining experience. Get ready to savor every slice of this exquisite fig and prosciutto pizza!

Essential Ingredients for Your Fig and Prosciutto Pizza: Selection & Tips

Crafting the perfect fig and prosciutto pizza begins with understanding and selecting the right ingredients. Here’s an in-depth look at the key components of this recipe, along with helpful tips and potential substitutions to ensure your pizza is nothing short of spectacular. The full list of ingredients, including precise quantities, can be found in the printable recipe card below.

Brie Cheese: The Creamy Heart of the Pizza

While Brie is a celebrated star on charcuterie boards, its melting properties and distinctive flavor make it an exceptional choice for pizza. Unlike firmer cheeses, Brie melts into a luxurious, ooey-gooey texture that coats the crust beautifully, providing a creamy counterpoint to the other robust toppings. Its mild, buttery, and slightly tangy profile integrates seamlessly with the sweetness of figs and the saltiness of prosciutto.

Pro Tip: To achieve the smoothest, most even melt on your pizza, it’s crucial to remove the rind from the Brie before spreading it onto the crust. The rind, while edible, has a different melting point and can result in a less uniform texture. Allow the Brie to come to room temperature for 30-45 minutes before use; this makes it much easier to spread. If you find a specific Brie too strong, opt for a younger, milder wheel for a more delicate flavor that won’t overpower the other ingredients.

Fresh Figs: Seasonal Sweetness

Fresh figs are undoubtedly the highlight of this pizza, offering a natural sweetness and unique texture that caramelizes beautifully in the oven. The world of figs is diverse, and you have several delightful options to choose from:

  • Black Mission Figs: These are arguably the most widely available and recognizable variety. Known for their deep purple-black skin and intensely sweet, jammy flesh, they are an excellent choice. Their rich flavor complements the savory elements perfectly.
  • Calimyrna Figs: Larger and often green or golden-yellow, Calimyrnas have a nutty flavor and a chewier texture. They offer a slightly less sweet profile, which can be a wonderful balance.
  • Celeste Figs: Also known as “sugar figs,” these small to medium-sized figs have light brown to purple skin and incredibly sweet, honey-like flesh.
  • Brown Turkey Figs: Featuring purplish-brown skin and a milder, less sweet flavor compared to Black Mission figs, Brown Turkeys are slightly more tart, offering a different dynamic if you prefer less sweetness.

Selection & Seasonality: The best time to enjoy fresh figs is during their peak season, typically late summer through early fall. When selecting figs at the market, look for ones that are ripe, plump, and have unblemished skin. They should feel soft to the touch but not mushy. Avoid figs that are hard, shriveled, or show signs of mold. While we particularly love the rich, sweet flavor of Black Mission figs when they are in season, any ripe, fresh fig variety will contribute wonderfully to this pizza.

Prosciutto: The Savory Counterbalance

Prosciutto, a dry-cured Italian ham, brings a crucial element of savory saltiness and delicate texture to the pizza. Its thinly sliced nature ensures that it crisps slightly around the edges when baked, adding another layer of texture. The contrast between its inherent saltiness and the figs’ sweetness is what makes this pairing so iconic and beloved.

Sourcing Tips: For the best flavor and texture, we highly recommend purchasing freshly sliced prosciutto from the deli counter at your local specialty market or grocery store. Ask for it sliced paper-thin, as this ensures optimal flavor distribution and a delightful melt-in-your-mouth quality. However, if time is a constraint, good quality pre-packaged, thinly sliced prosciutto readily available in most supermarkets will also work perfectly fine.

Pizza Dough: The Foundation

The crust is the canvas for our delicious toppings. While nothing quite compares to the satisfaction and superior texture of a homemade pizza dough, the beauty of this recipe is its flexibility. The focus is truly on the toppings, allowing you to choose the crust option that best suits your schedule and preferences.

  • Homemade Pizza Dough: If you have the time and inclination, our easy homemade pizza dough recipe offers a fantastic foundation. It provides a fresh flavor and chewy texture that’s hard to beat. Making your own dough also allows for customization in thickness and texture.
  • Store-Bought Pizza Dough: For a convenient shortcut, pick up a ball of store-bought pizza dough from your grocer’s refrigerated section. Many brands offer excellent quality dough that can be rolled out just like homemade. Remember to let it come to room temperature before rolling for easier handling.
  • Ready-Made Flatbreads: If you’re truly short on time or prefer not to work with fresh dough, a store-bought flatbread like naan or a pre-baked pizza crust is an excellent substitute. These ready-made options offer a quick and satisfying meal. You can adapt baking instructions from one of our other naan pizza recipes for guidance. The slightly thicker texture of naan can provide a wonderful base, absorbing the flavors beautifully.

Orange Zest & Fresh Rosemary: The Aromatic Finish

Inspired by the classic Italian gremolata, the vibrant combination of fresh orange zest and finely chopped rosemary adds an unexpected yet delightful aromatic layer to this pizza. The citrusy brightness of the orange cuts through the richness of the Brie and prosciutto, while the piney, earthy notes of rosemary provide a sophisticated depth of flavor. This finishing touch elevates the pizza from delicious to truly exceptional.

Tip for Zesting: When zesting the orange, use a microplane grater and be careful to only grate the bright orange part of the peel, avoiding the white pith underneath, which can be bitter. Finely chopping the rosemary releases its essential oils, ensuring maximum fragrance and flavor.

By thoughtfully selecting and preparing these key ingredients, you are well on your way to creating an unforgettable fig and prosciutto pizza with Brie.

Prep Overview: Crafting Your Gourmet Pizza

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Fig and Prosciutto Pizza with Brie

Embarking on this delightful culinary journey is simpler than you might imagine. This quick overview highlights the essential steps to prepare your gourmet fig and prosciutto pizza. For comprehensive, detailed instructions and quantities, please refer to the printable recipe card provided further down.

1. Prepare Your Ingredients for Optimal Flavor: Begin by ensuring your Brie cheese is at room temperature. This makes it significantly easier to spread smoothly across the pizza crust. While the Brie softens, carefully remove the top rind; this step is crucial for achieving an even, creamy melt. If you’re using chilled pizza dough, take it out of the refrigerator at the same time to allow it to relax and become more pliable, making it easier to roll out.

2. Preheat and Pre-Bake the Crust: Preheat your oven to a high temperature, typically 450°F (230°C), with a rack positioned in the center. Lightly dust your work surface with cornmeal to prevent sticking. Divide your pizza dough in half and roll each piece into a thin, rectangular shape, aiming for about 1/8-inch thickness. Carefully transfer the rolled dough to a large baking sheet. Gently pinch the edges to create a slightly raised crust. Brush the edges with a little olive oil, then pre-bake the crusts for approximately 6 minutes, or just until they are lightly golden. This pre-baking step ensures a crispy base and prevents a soggy pizza.

3. Prep Your Toppings: While the pre-baked crusts cool for a few minutes, prepare the rest of your exquisite toppings. Trim the stems from your fresh figs and slice them into quarters or wedges, depending on their size. Take your paper-thin slices of prosciutto and cut them into smaller, manageable pieces that will be easy to distribute and enjoy on each slice. In a small bowl, combine the finely chopped fresh rosemary with the vibrant zest of one orange. This aromatic mixture will add a burst of freshness and depth to your pizza.

4. Assemble Your Pizzas: Once the crusts have cooled slightly, divide the softened Brie cheese in half. Using a small spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the creamy Brie evenly over each pre-baked crust. Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly smooth – its deliciousness will shine through regardless. Generously sprinkle the orange zest and rosemary mixture over the Brie. Next, artfully scatter the fig wedges across the cheese, ensuring each bite will get a taste of their natural sweetness. Finally, tuck the pieces of prosciutto in between the figs and over the Brie, allowing some to slightly overlap. Finish with a generous grind of fresh black pepper.

5. Final Bake and Serve: Return the assembled pizzas to the preheated oven. Bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the Brie is completely melted and bubbling, the crust is perfectly crisp and golden brown, and the figs have softened and started to lightly caramelize around the edges. This final bake brings all the flavors together and ensures a beautifully cooked pizza. Once out of the oven, allow the pizzas to rest for 5 minutes before slicing them into squares. This resting period helps the cheese set slightly, making for cleaner cuts and preventing the toppings from sliding off. Serve immediately and savor the exquisite blend of flavors!

Recipe Variation: Elevate Your Appetizer Game with Fig and Prosciutto Crostini

The sublime combination of sweet figs, savory prosciutto, creamy Brie, and aromatic orange zest with rosemary is so versatile and universally loved that it can easily be transformed into an elegant appetizer. If you’re looking for a delightful finger food that’s perfect for entertaining, consider making Fig and Prosciutto Crostini using these same fantastic ingredients. Here’s how you can prepare this impressive bite-sized treat:

  • Prepare the Crostini Base: Begin by thinly slicing a fresh baguette into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Arrange these slices on a baking sheet and toast them lightly in the oven until they are golden brown and crisp. This creates the perfect sturdy base for your toppings.
  • Assemble with Freshness: Once the crostini are toasted, spread a small dollop of softened Brie cheese on each slice. The Brie will melt beautifully, creating a rich base. Top each with a quartered or halved fresh fig piece, depending on the size of your figs and crostini. Drape a delicate piece of prosciutto over the fig and cheese.
  • Add the Finishing Touch and Bake: Finish each crostini with a sprinkle of the vibrant orange zest and finely chopped fresh rosemary. Arrange all the assembled crostini back on the baking sheet.
  • Quick Bake for Perfection: Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for just 3 to 5 minutes, or until the Brie has melted into a creamy pool and the figs are slightly softened. Serve immediately, allowing your guests to enjoy the warm, harmonious flavors.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces Brie cheese
  • 12 fresh figs
  • 4 ounces prosciutto, sliced paper-thin
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 lb pizza dough, (see notes below for options)
  • Cornmeal, (for dusting the work surface)
  • Olive oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Slice the rind from the top of the wheel of Brie and discard it. Loosely cover the Brie and allow it to warm to room temperature for 30 to 45 minutes; this makes it much easier to spread. If you are using chilled pizza dough, remove it from the refrigerator at the same time and set it aside to allow it to relax.
  • Position an oven rack in the center of your oven and preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Trim the stems from the fresh figs. Depending on their size, slice each fig into 4 to 6 wedges.
  • Cut the paper-thin slices of prosciutto into smaller, more manageable pieces, roughly into quarters. In a small bowl, combine the finely chopped fresh rosemary and the orange zest.
  • Lightly dust a clean work surface with cornmeal. Divide your pizza dough in half and gently flatten each piece with the heel of your hand. Using your fingertips, carefully shape each half into a rectangular form, then roll them out to a thickness of approximately 1/8-inch.
  • Carefully transfer the rolled pizza dough, cornmeal side down, to a large (17 x 12 inch) baking sheet. Gently pinch around the outsides of each dough rectangle to create a slightly raised edge, forming a crust.
  • Lightly brush the raised edges of the crusts with olive oil. Pre-bake the crusts in the preheated oven for about 6 minutes, or until they are barely golden in color. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool for 5 minutes. This step helps ensure a crispy pizza base.
  • Divide the softened Brie cheese in half. Using a small spatula or spoon, scoop the creamy cheese from the rind and spread a portion evenly over each pre-baked crust. Don’t be concerned if it looks a little uneven. Sprinkle the orange zest and rosemary mixture generously over the Brie.
  • Artfully scatter the fig wedges over the Brie layer. Then, nestle the pieces of prosciutto in between the figs and around the crust. Finish with a little freshly ground black pepper for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Return the assembled pizzas to the oven and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the Brie is beautifully melted and bubbling, the crust is crisp and golden brown, and the figs are soft and beginning to caramelize at the edges.
  • Carefully remove the pizzas from the oven. Allow them to cool for 5 minutes before slicing into squares. This brief resting period helps the cheese to set and prevents the toppings from sliding off when cut. Serve warm and enjoy!
